3M licenses colouring technology
13 mars 2012
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Mar. 13, 2012 – 3M announced today that Zirkonzahn GmbH has become the latest dental company to license 3M’s patented technology that enables the colouring of zirconia-based dental restorations. This improves esthetics for patients by enabling the colour matching of dental restorations to the natural colour of the patients’ teeth. Since 3M's development and launch of this game-changing technology, much of the industry colours dental zirconia using this process.
The license agreement resolves a nearly two-year patent infringement lawsuit between 3M and Zirkonzahn in Düsseldorf, Germany. 3M is open to licensing this technology to other dental manufactures and interested parties.
As the next step in protecting 3M’s patented technology, 3M has filed a patent infringement lawsuit in Düsseldorf against Ivoclar Vivadent regarding its non-shaded zirconia CAD/CAM blocks and colouring liquids sold under the IPS e.max ZirCAD brand.
3M is committed to improving oral care through continuous R&D investments. The company’s dental division, 3M ESPE, has been recognized as the most innovative dental company for the past seven years by the Anaheim Group. This distinction is awarded based on the number of patent filings, 510k clearances and new product introductions.
